We have stayed at the Point South KOA in Yemassee, South Carolina twice now and both Jordana and I really like this RV Park. Something transpires when you drive through the welcome gate at Yemasse KOA. It’s almost like being taken back in time to a simpler way of life. Time slows down and nature takes over. Maybe it’s the tall Angel Oak trees with their large branches and Spanish Moss providing cool shade or the sound of birds chirping, or the sandy ground that brings back images of Civil War era battles. We haven’t given this park enough of our time, because we have used it as a rest stop twice now, but we plan on coming back to explore more of the area.
Point South Yemassee KOA is conveniently located right off I95 using exit 33 to head east on Route 17. There are restaurants and gas stations on the north and south side of route 17 right by the road that leads to the KOA. The closest gas station is the Shell Station and as of this post Unleaded Gas was at $3.09.
The biggest thing you will notice at this KOA is the friendly staff and overwhelming hospitality. The check in process is simple and done with a welcoming smile in the Swimming Mermaid Coffee and Wine Bar reception area. From there you will have an escort to your site to help you get situated. We love the pull through sites as it makes our life easier while towing our Jeep. Point South Yemassee KOA boasts a max length of 90 feet on some of it’s sites. They have pull through sites with 30/50 amps, water and full hook up. They also provide 62 channels of cable and free wifi. In addition to regular RV sites they have premium pull through sites with a deck, propane grill, fireplace and table and chairs. As of this posting, for our one night stay in a pull through full hook up site, we paid $67.77 minus our KOA discount plus tax for a total of $68.92. Check in and check out times for RV sites is 12 pm.
More information on booking an RV site can be found here.
In addition to RV sites, there are also cabins and converted train cabooses that you can rent to stay in. For more information on those click here.
Tent sites are also available and information can be found here to book a site.
With two kids ages 5 and 3 we have some hefty requirements to check off when it comes to picking a place to stay. Number 1 is a pool. The RV campground must have a pool. If it doesn’t, we will hear about it. This KOA has a good sized pool with a shallow end of 3 feet and a deep end of 8 feet. Perfect for swimming and having fun. The pool is not heated however. When we were here in April it was a very cold swim. This time around, June, it was nice and refreshing. Click here to see our first visit video. The other requirement is a playground. The Point South Yemassee KOA has a decent kids playground, a tether ball pit, sluice box mining setup, along with corn hole, horseshoe pit and giant size chess board. It’s plenty to keep our kids occupied.
If you are heading to Point South Yemassee KOA and you are out of propane or need a refill, don’t worry. They have a large propane fill station on site and can easily fill up your tank. The fill station is located right as you pull in. Just ask the desk for assistance.
Point South Yemassee KOA is also pet friendly and has a Kamp K9 dog run outfitted with a nice fire hydrant for your pooch.
During the afternoon we decided to take a nice stroll to the lake on the property. It’s about a 1/4 mile from the main office and is just past the dog run where you will need to cross over a small bridge. On the way to the lake you will be met with a sign stating “Alligator Habitat.” We kept our eyes and ears open but did not run into any alligators. We did see some frogs, however. The lake is 12 acres large and has a path around it that you can walk. It was kept cut and is a nice walk for some exercise.
A big added benefit of some RV parks is having a laundry area. As full time RV folks we are always trying to figure out when to do laundry, and how to keep it low cost. Another big issue is operating hours of the laundry area. Point South Yemassee KOA has great hours from 8 am to 9 pm. Plenty of time to get your laundry done while chasing the kids around the rv park. As of this post the rate for washing machine and dryer use was $2.00 each.
In closing the Point South KOA in Yemassee, SC is awesome. We thoroughly enjoyed our time staying at this RV Park and this KOA ranks up high on our list. We give it 4.5 /5 stars. It’s a great value for an rv spot and it’s close to a lot of attractions. For us, it was a great rest stop off of I95 for our travels south and north. We plan to come back again to explore the area when we can spend more time here and we are looking forward to it.
