Tour of the National Mall

After our first day travel disaster we awoke to a beautiful day in Maryland. Jordana and I haven’t been to Washington DC since 2015 while Aurelia was in her belly. We decided to make the most of the day and take a trip in to see the National Mall and get in as many monuments as we could. We are still learning how much time we can spend adventuring with the kids before we need to take breaks or call it quits, so after the long travel day we didn’t want to push it too much. Tomorrow would be another travel day.

We had a slow morning settling in to the rv park and decided to take an afternoon adventure. We took a nice drive to DC and hit our fair share of traffic. We were lucky to find a parking spot by the Washington Monument and began our adventure from there.

Built to honor George Washington, the United States’ first president, the 555-foot marble obelisk towers over Washington, D.C.

It took a little over 55 years to complete this monument. There were plenty of mishaps. If you look closely you can see two separate colors of stone marking the first section and then the second section of work.

After having fun at the Washington Monument and enjoying a small snack we took the short walk over to the World War II Monument.

This tribute to our WWII Veterans is simply breathtaking and awe inspiring.

The fountain pool at the WWII Monument allows you to place your feet in the water just as our soldiers did in the fountains of Europe.

We had two ducks come swim up to us while we sat with our feet in the water.

Price of Freedom Wall. Each star represents 100 US Soldiers who died or are still missing from World War II. There are 4,048 Gold Stars on this wall.

We then took the walk over to the Lincoln Memorial and walked along the reflection pool.

We ended our visitation of the monuments with a walk along the Vietnam Memorial Wall.

We took this picture for Cappy. It was his battle buddy and best friend in Vietnam.

We ended our day with a nice walk back to the Jeep from the Vietnam Memorial along Constitution Ave. We passed by the Constitution Gardens and enjoyed the nice weather. It was a nice visit to the Nation’s Capitol. If we weren’t hitting the road the next day we would have taking more time to see more monuments. Also, a lot of the museums and buildings are closed to visitors due to covid restrictions. We left just in time for rush hour traffic and it took us about an hour to get back to the RV park. All in all it was a nice little adventure for the family and made up for the previous travel day.

Keep an eye out for an upcoming youtube video of this adventure.
